The UK artist Beryl Cook was famed for her paintings of voluptuous ladies and often equally rounded men taken from her experiences of life, the people she knew and the places she visited. I mention her because her style and the seaside postcard tradition upon which it drew came to mind when I first saw images by the Japanese artist Namio Harukawa.

You can hang a beryl Cook painting almost anywhere and it will not offend. You certainly could not say the same for Namio Harukawa.

Born in 1947 in the Osaka Prefecture Namio Harukawa has developed a cult following in the BDSM community, particularly since the development of the Internet and now features on many web sites.

The art of Namio Harukawa often features face sitting, cunnilingus, anilingus and restraint. Yes you can take them as almost comical illustrations, or as perverted drawings but study them for a while and they are deeper than that. Look at the expressions on the faces of the women.
